Tips to Help Protect and Maintain Fur
- Always store your fur during warm weather and with your furrier.
- Have your fur lusterglazed annually by a fur specialist.
- Never attempt to moth proof your fur yourself.
- Home treatments are no substitute for professional cleaning and storage.
- NEVER store your fur in a deep freeze—VERY BAD IDEA.
- NEVER store your fur in a cedar closet.
- Avoid perfume, hairspray and make-up from coming in direct contact with your fur. The alcohol content in these products will dry the leather and stiffen the guard hairs.
- Yes it is ok to wear your fur in the snow and light rain. The guard hairs nad natural oils in the fur should cause the water to run off and not penetrate the leather under the fur.
- Never keep furs in plastic garment bags, deep freeze or cedar closets. Plastic prevents air from circulating and can dry out the leather. Use a cloth garment bag provided by your furrier.
- Avoid leaving a fur hanging in bright spaces. The light can cause oxidization or change colour.
- Hang your fur on a broad-shouldered hanger, never a wire hanger. Give you fur room in the closet so it is not crushed.
- If your fur gets wet, shake it out and hang to dry in a well-ventilated room. Keep away from heat or a radiator, which can cause shrinking. If fur has been fully saturated, soaked through, bring it to your furrier immediately for proper treatment. Do not comb or brush fur.
- Have all repairs done by your furrier.
- Avoid spraying perfume or hairspray onto your fur.
